Camp Hope is an inclusive summer day camp for children ages 4-12 managing behavioral needs, mental health diagnoses, intellectual disability, and/or trauma. It offers trauma- competent programming to allow more access for children who are unable to attend an existing community based summer camp with their peers.

Children at Camp Hope have access to:

  • Equine-Assisted Therapy

  • Music Therapy

  • Art Therapy

  • Occupational Therapy

  • Mentorship

  • Nature Exploration

  • Sensory Experiences

  • De-escalation Spaces

  • and more!

Research indicates the benefits of a camp experience for a child include:

  • Improvement in relationships with peers and adults

  • Increased confidence and independence

  • Easing of home tensions by providing parents a reprieve from the rigors of caregiving

(KidsHealth, 2018)

These positive outcomes continue to contribute to the growth and development of the child as they transition back to school, require less services during their school day and lead to a stronger and more functional family dynamic.

In an effort to meet the growing need for an inclusive summer camp experience, Camp Hope has moved to a priority level system for applications. We believe this system will an objective way to help us become more equitable and inclusive as our waitlist and community need grows beyond our current capacity. This new process will allow families to register at a more reasonable time and pace and give more families an opportunity to experience Camp Hope.

Important Dates

January 13th, 2025: Application will be posted on our Camp Hope site

  • Submission dates/times will not contribute towards an applications priority

  • 2 reminder emails will be sent during this window to families who have previously attended Camp Hope (from 2023/2024) and/or currently attend Thrive

February 3rd: Applications will be closed

February 24th: Based on a the priority level of their application, families will be made aware if they have a spot or are waitlisted, and if so, for which weeks

  • Waitlisted campers will receive an email biweekly on Mondays with an update of where their camper is on the waitlist

May 14th: Accepted campers must have their CampDoc forms 100% completed, with balance paid/payment plan established, and all New Camper Visits must be completed to ensure spot

May 16th: Waitlisted campers will be notified if they are promoted from the waitlist

May 30th: Any campers promoted from the waitlist must have CampDoc 100% completed, with balance paid/payment plan established, and all New Camper Visits must be completed to ensure spot (no waitlisted new campers will receive a spot after this date)

* Please Note: In an effort to try to serve as many children that are only able to attend our camp and minimize our waitlist, siblings who are neurotypical/able to attend a traditional community-based camp will not be able to participate in Camp Hope. We understand the benefits of being able to have multiple children in one camp and our goal is to further prioritize children who truly cannot go to camp anywhere else.

Camp Hope is our favorite time of year and we are very excited to be able to hopefully serve more campers than ever in 2025!

FAQ’s

  • Back in March RHI staff toured a space in Waynesboro, knowing that we'd outgrown the space at Charlottesville Waldorf School. The staff at Westminster made us feel welcome and they would genuinely love to host us. However, our biggest factor for the change in location is financial. Other unique benefits to Westminster are a full kitchen where we plan to do cooking/baking with campers, a cafeteria where campers across classrooms/age ranges can eat lunch together, and a space that is specifically designed for teens.

  • We recognize Waynesboro is significantly farther away for some families and that transportation may be a barrier. In an effort to continue to try to make our programming equitable, we are working to obtain transportation for Charlottesville families who need Camp Hope, but would otherwise be unable to transport their camper to Waynesboro. Transportation will be at an additional cost. We are working hard to coordinate with various organizations to finalize the details which will be published here. If transportation is necessary for your child to attend, please indicate so on the application.

  • At our Staff Retreat in January, we voted to pilot a tiered priority application model for 2025. We consulted with a number of specialized camps across the country that use this model to create an application that will rank your camper's level of support needs to help us decide more objectively which children are most in need of Camp Hope. When we review the applications as a team, they will initially appear anonymously to us.

  • No! A few years ago, we moved to grouping camp into three two-week sessions. We will pause this model for 2025, as we have received numerous points of feedback from families that some would only like their camper to attend one week, three weeks instead of four, etc. This will allow for more spots. New campers still can only attend a maximum of two weeks and they must be consecutive.

  • We are constantly revising and improving the programming of Camp Hope based on parent/staff feedback. Here are a few things we will be doing this year:

    • Parent Communication- We heard your feedback that you'd like additional communication while your camper is with us. We are still workshopping practical ways for our staff to do so without taking away too much time. We will likely be piloting a new app, but stay tuned for more information about this in the future.

    • Staffing- We will begin to offer one half-day per week off for our full-time Senior Counselors! We simply could not do Camp Hope without all of our counselors and recognize that a huge factor in increasing staff retention is frontloading ways to mitigate caregiver burnout and compassion fatigue. We currently have an average of 60% staff retention over the past five years and hope to increase this number to 65% in 2025.

    • We received feedback from parents that some of our older campers would like more opportunities to spend intentional time with our younger campers and are planning to pilot this in 2025.
